Joe Fleming

Using two distinctive disciplines, Canadian artist Joe Fleming’s paintings are a cross between storytelling and mark making. His works feature the use of surface materials like Plexiglas and aluminum wall studs, covered in thick impasto paint. Fleming’s works also include figures drawn from his interest in film making. Drawing inspiration from movie stills, Fleming strips these figures down to a base image where personality is lost. These are enlarged on a textured surface which he describes as ‘adding a sense of drama for the viewer while keeping within the realm of abstraction.’
Joe Fleming returned to TAKSU Kuala Lumpur in May 2009 with a solo exhibition entitled ‘Scratches & Dots’ - a showcase of beautiful acrylic works on gouged plywood and plexiglas. The entire process of his art-making, together with the activity leading up to this exhibition was closely filmed for a documentary by Canadian director Michelle Mama and cinematographer John V. Lindsay.
Joe Fleming graduated from Sheridan College of Applied Arts in 1986 and has since been exhibiting his works internationally for over 20 years. He is also active in film-making - his second love. Fleming’s works has been collected by the Edmonton Art Gallery and the Canadian Postal Museum in Ottawa.
