TRAVELLING LIGHT: Solo Exhibition by Jumaadi
TAKSU Kuala Lumpur, 24 February – 16 April 2011

Over the past decade Jumaadi has traveled extensively through the landscapes of Indonesia and Australia. His journey has taken him from tropical forest to sandy desert, allowing him to gaze on social landscapes as he digests and documents his travels and memories in short poems and visual diaries. Although he remembers particular moments, the more Jumaadi marks his tracks in each destination, the less concerned he becomes with the ideal place. During intervals spent in his studios, his notes and sketches are worked into larger constructions, which may resemble a line of windows on a passenger train or portholes on a cruise liner.

Despite frequent travels, Jumaadi has yet to master the art of “traveling light” as his bags are crammed with art materials and objects found along the way and his mind filled with new stories of folklore and local gossip. Jumaadi never remains the detached outsider. In his past projects, Jumaadi has exhibited on themes including man made nature, unsent letters, rain rain come again and museum of memory. This exhibition is a continuous uploading, stopping and moving again, a window on an ongoing journey.
