Many of Jan Wisse’s paintings depict details of the human body. In the Character Cocoons series, Jan depicts the human figure in each unique ‘umbrella’ sculptures. The human figure mostly refers to the concepts of ‘human nature’; fame, glamour, power, sensuality, as well as vulnerability and failure, are part of all that. As such, human characteristics is the main ingredient in his works, appearing in various forms. 3-dimensional wall objects, as well as the painted portrait, are some of his specialities. Other leading themes in his works are ‘obstruction’ and ‘hinderance’. Limitations bound us and hold us back. All of us, living creatures, do encounter or impose unto ourselves, inhibitory events. Jan likes to give this rather dreary choice a quirky or humorous twist.
